salina journal, the (ks)-february 17, 2004

beloit — a beloit businessman said monday he’ll be at today’s beloit city council meeting seeking information about the unsolved murder of a beloit woman.

max mcgaughey said wants to know whether the beloit police department is included in the investigation of carol fleming’s murder.

“they should be involved,” he said. “it took place in the city limits.”

the owner of beloit gun & pawn said he will pose the question at today’s beloit city council meeting at 7 p.m. in the city’s municipal building.

in december, mitchell county attorney rod ludwig said kansas bureau of investigation special agent bill pettijohn and the mitchell county sheriff’s office would lead the investigation.

those agencies were chosen, he said, because of their experience.

“i’ve worked with bill pettijohn on numerous homicides both in mitchell county and in other counties,” ludwig said monday. “the kbi is heading the investigation, and the second one in line is the sheriff’s office, with wayne loy as the investigator.”

further, the prosecutor said, beloit police are still involved in the investigation.

“their role is to shift information to pettijohn and to do what he asks them to do,” ludwig said. “he has cooperated with the (police).”
